August | What I’ve been up to

August was a great month! I spent some time in North Carolina at a fun and inspiring music festival, I met Glennon Melton from Momastery and got to interview her and hang out with her, and I found out that my daughter does not have to see her heart doctor for 2 years! This is all crazy awesome good news.

Also, summer in Traverse City is so much fun. One program that I run through my full time job was in full swing. Here’s a video about how I do college counseling on a sailboat.

So, on a personal level, August was very fun, fulfilling, and tiring. On the Monday we drove back from North Carolina I saw six clients, which was crazy! I normally would not put myself through that, but I had been gone and a number of these folks really needed to see me. I was going to be sailing during their regularly scheduled appointments, so I made it work.

Also, I have been setting some very clear boundaries around my time. I am only seeing clients on my lunch 2x per week and on Monday and Tuesday evenings. As a result, I saw fewer clients, but I am much happier (It’s really hard to work full time, run a website, and do a private practice, while also being a dad and husband!).

Lastly, I have been spending a lot of time on something that I believe will pay off big in the coming months. I have been working on a print version of my book Mental Wellness Parenting | A remarkably simple approach to making parenting easier. I’m doing this for several reasons:

1. People have been asking for it.

2. I am doing a keynote speech in September, which I am having videotaped. That way you can learn and grow as well. At the conference, I want to sell some of the books.

3. I am doing more speaking engagements, so having a book for sale is a great way to continue the conversation and build passive income.

4. It’s really fun!

With that said, what a headache! I am so frustrated with Amazon’s CreateSpace! Since I launched my e-books through Kindle Direct Publishing, I thought that the two Amazon companies would be able to share information…that is not the case, so the formatting has taken a good 20+ hours! Not the writing, the formatting!!! Needless to say, I sure hope I see a good ROI on that use of time.

Why I do this

I always have this portion so that for the new folks they can know what’s up. As you probably know, I work a full time job and do a bunch of other things to build passive income, active income, and generally try and help people improve their lives. I’ve been doing these income reports since September 2012. I often get the question, “How much does a counselor make?” this is my response. If you are new to the website, I do this for a number of reasons:

1. So you know exactly where I make money. That way, you don’t have to wonder if I’m full of crap, if you can trust me, or if you can learn something. My hope is that you trust me and that through that you’re more likely to get involved, possibly follow an affiliate link, or purchase something. Then you’ll know the question to, “How much does a counselor make?”

2. So as to inspire you. So often, we think that our incomes have an upper limit that is determined by someone else. When we have control of that upper limit, there is something really refreshing about that.

3. To hold myself accountable. I’m not always the best with book-keeping and monitoring where and how I make money. This forces me to keep better track of my goals and outcomes. I’m actually getting a lot better.

August 2013 Earning Report

What I’m going to be reporting and what I’m not going to be reporting

Full-time Job: Since some of you are new and some of you have been around Practice of the Practice for a while, I’m going to give a quick summary of where I make income. My full-time job is at a community college as a counselor. I love the job and it gives me great opportunities. Also, since my wife stays home with our daughter it is an income we can count on, health insurance, a pension, and a really great environment! I’m not going to disclose my full-time wages there, since it is not something that is part of my private practice.

Private Practice: I do 3-8 sessions a week in my private practice. I don’t take insurance, so it is private-pay. As a result, I don’t have many expenses in time or actual money. Included in my consulting (not my private practice money) is time I spend doing supervision for LLPCs (Limited Licensed Professional Counselors), a 100 hour requirement in Michigan.

Passive Income: The term “passive” makes it sound like I don’t have to do work. What I mean is money that I make that is not in direct exchange for my time. I will outline what these are under each item.

Disclosure: many of the links below are affiliate links that will earn me a commission if you purchase through them. If you do, I really appreciate it and if you have any questions about any of the products or services please contact me! Also, if you don’t have a good experience with them, I want to know that too.

Consulting and LLPC Supervision: $593.02

E-books: $72.96 (Also, I gave away all of my books for free on 8-13-13 and had 492 downloads!) I think this will help with promotion and having other counselors promote my books to their clients.

Some of the numbers from Google Ads, Amazon, NameCheap, and my e-books will not be paid until they reach a certain amount or 60-90 days after the sale. I report what has been sold in the month it was sold. Also, I do not take expenses off of this report.
