It was awesome to be on Kelvin Johnson’s The Counsel-preneur Podcast.

Welcome all of you Counsel-preneurs that have never been here.

I’m Joe Sanok. I own Mental Wellness Counseling in Traverse City, MI and started Practice of the Practice a few years ago. My goal is to help counselors in private practice to reach their ambitious results!

My show with Kelvin was all about how to grow a private practice. Here are seven more tips to help you grow your private practice.

Private Practice Growth Tip #1  | Sign up for HARO

HARO (Help a Reporter Out) is an amazing way to get more media exposure.  You’ll get three emails a day (morning, noon, and night) with requests from small newspapers, CNN, and writers all over the world. Tip: When you email them back, completely answer the question, don’t make them work hard for the interview!

Private Practice Growth Tip #2  | Learn more about keywords

Like I said in the podcast, you can just go on Google and see what pops up. However, for more advanced blogging, you’ll want to start using this Google Keyword Tool. This walk-through guides you how to:

  • Exactly how many times a person searches a keyword per month
  • Other ideas that rank higher
  • How to focus on building organic keyword searches

Private Practice Growth Tip #3  | Write thank you notes

Every time I get a new referral, I ask the person if I can write a thank you note to the referral source. Most people are fine with me writing to their doctor, pastor, or principal. By doing this, I show follow-up, thankfulness, and make sure they have plenty of business cards. Here’s a whole blog post about the importance of thank you notes.

Private Practice Growth Tip #4  | Engage more with your own doctor

I’ve found that getting more referrals from doctors is remarkably easy! Doctors want a few things:

  • To know you, not just your name or business card
  • Understand who is a good referral and who is not a good referral
  • They want the referral to be easy
  • The want follow-up, especially if the client does not follow up

Private Practice Growth Tip #5  | Rank higher in Google using WordPress

If your website is not a WordPress-based website, you are leaving money on the table. WordPress is the single best platform to rank higher in Google. To get started all you have to do is:

  • Set up your hosting with Bluehost (affiliate link, thanks for using it), it’s around $4/month and you own the website and hosting!
  • Install WordPress, if you have troubles just drop me an email, I’ve done it a ton of times.
  • Start writing and blogging!!!
