January 2014 | How to make extra money
Last month I discussed how I was really evaluating how I can find a balance between creating income and enjoying life. I love writing for Practice of the Practice and also finding new and innovative ways to learn how to make extra money. However, it can be sort of addictive. I think that for so long I thought that I would only make a certain income, it’s been fun to break that mold, yet it also can be all-consuming. This month has been a month of seeking that balance.
How I’m finding a balance
1. I have started scheduling more time with one of my best friends over my lunch hours. This week we’re going to be walking and talking for three of my lunch hours. I’m getting exercise and also feeling that personal fulfillment.
2. I’m implementing many of the SEO strategies that Sarah Barnes taught me in podcast episodes 25 and 26. If I can optimize my blog posts to create a larger audience, that will mean I need to do less work marketing. Also, since making changes to the way my newsletter sign-up pops up, my e-mail list has doubled! As you can see from the screen shot, that helped me name today’s post!
3. I went to Vegas. This may not sound like a way to relax, and it was definitely tiring, but I went with my uncles, brother, dad, aunts, and cousins. Since my daughter was born almost 3 years ago, I have not had a vacation away. It was really wonderful to connect with those relatives. In fact, in the recent podcast you heard one of my best interviews ever, it’s all about How to Change Your Life!
In December I finished my first e-book/journal called “Counseling Companion.” It’s meant to help clients stay on track outside of counseling, give counselors the ability to give homework, and all a bit more structure outside of the sessions. I invited only people on my email list to apply to get free copies for themselves and their clients. I had six counselors that won the option and those six blew my mind!
That’s 247 free books! What a great launch. That means that on average each counselor got 41 people to download it. It’s going to be so helpful for them, but also create a buzz around the book!

January 2014 Earning Report
What I’m going to be reporting about how to make extra money and what I’m not going to be reporting
Full-time Job: Since some of you are new and some of you have been around Practice of the Practice for a while, I’m going to give a quick summary of where I make income. My full-time job is at a community college as a counselor. I love the job and it gives me great opportunities. Also, since my wife stays home with our daughter it is an income we can count on, health insurance, a pension, and a really great environment! I’m not going to disclose my full-time wages there, since it is not something that is part of my private practice.
Private Practice: I do 3-4 sessions a week in my private practice. I don’t take insurance, so it is private-pay. As a result, I don’t have many expenses in time or actual money. Included in my consulting (not my private practice money) is time I spend doing supervision for LLPCs (Limited Licensed Professional Counselors), a 100 hour requirement in Michigan.
Passive Income: The term “passive” makes it sound like I don’t have to do work. What I mean is money that I make that is not in direct exchange for my time. I will outline what these are under each item.
