Marketing Resources for Private Practice

Marketing Resources to improve a private practice

These are all of the great resources that I have found very useful in launching and growing my counseling private practice. I do want you to know that some of these things are affiliate links, meaning that I get a small commission for recommending them. With that said, I would not recommend them unless I thought they would make your counseling private practice more awesome. I take being an affiliate seriously, I am aligning myself with these products because I have experienced growth through learning through them. These are resources I believe can help you build your business. If your experience is different, I really want to know! If you ever have questions about me being an affiliate or how that works, please drop me an email or check out my monthly earning reports. Here are things that can really help your practice grow!

The Start-up Guide to Guerrilla Marketing

This is a great book about marketing tactics that are free, cheap, and effective. I read this book while my wife and I were on a 6 week road trip. We were moving back to our home town of Traverse City, where I was going to be starting my counseling private practice. This book was the catalyst for so many of the ideas that got me started. I require anyone that I am supervising to buy this and The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner (PracticePlanners). -Joseph R. The Four Hour Workweek

This book has a number of strategies for automating aspects of your counseling private practice. I disagree with a number of his concepts (Read with caution) but the tools and systems he discusses are very helpful! It is also a great way to just start the process of thinking about what you want your life to be.

Why Johnny Can’t Brand

Although this book is much more “big picture” than The Start-up Guide to Guerrilla Marketing it is an essential read to understanding what makes marketing work! I have a friend down in Austin, TX who does app development (see my article about him “A Successful Guide to Friends will Benefits“). I asked him, “What three business books would you recommend?” Of the three, this was my favorite and the one that will be most useful to counselors.

Business Cards

I really like the designers MOO or Overnight Prints, they have quality card stock which makes the card feel more professional. Postcards: Where I get postcards printed because they are really cheap and I want to be able to pass them out like candy to promote the private practice and things i am working on. www.vistaprint.com

Building a Website

Buying a domain: Places to buy website domains for around $10. Name Cheap (What I use) GoDaddy (what other folks use, and good). Each one offers deals, sign up for their mailing lists and they often offer a deal. When you do decide to buy, it’d be awesome if you went through my affiliate link.

Hosting: The website hosting that I use, it’s around $7 per month and is very intuitive. I have used Blue Host and I absolutely love it. It integrates so easily with WordPress, it’s secure, and it is cheap.

Design The FREE website design/publishing I use, thousands of themes and styles. Word Press I use code to put valuable products on my counseling private practice website. It makes it look a little bit better. To see what Amazon’s code will do, check out the pop-ups on my website http://www.mentalwellnesscounseling.com/resources

Creating a podcast

A counseling podcast will:

1. It is one of the fastest growing ways to market, and open you up to a global and national audience

2. Increases your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) immediately

3. Adds value and the perception of expertise to yourself and your practice.

What you will need to launch your podcast

Well before you start recording, you’ll want to identify your niche. There are tons of “counseling” podcasts. What are you going to do that is different? Also, though a podcast helps with many things, ultimately you want people that will listen. Start searching around to see what others are doing, listen to some, what do you like? What do you hate?

Here are some questions to help you start a podcast as a therapist:

What will be your podcast niche? Are there specific things that set your podcast apart from other therapist podcasts?

Why are you creating a podcast? What are your goals for the podcast? More local clients? More clients nation-wide?

What keywords do you want to rank higher for? If someone will benefit from your podcast, what terms are they searching for?

What equipment do you already have for recording?

What equipment do I need to start a podcast?

Some of these are affiliate links that help me to pay for my time on the website. Thanks in advance for using them to launch your counseling private practice podcast.

Here are the basic things you will need:

A computer | I use a Mac with GarageBand. I upgraded my older Mac with a new hard drive and RAM, Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 750 GB SATA 3 GB/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Internal Bulk/OEM 2.5-Inch Mobile Hard Drive

Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 667 MHz (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory (VS4GSDSKIT667D2)

A microphone | I use the Audio Technica AT2020USB Studio Condenser Microphone
My friend Aaron Dennis from Stone Hut Studios uses this for many of his video productions. I have really liked it. I’m still learning how to do levels.

Once you get those things set up and figured out, you can start practicing with GarageBand. In future posts we’ll talk about the nuts and bolts of recording, launching, and getting an audience!
