What clients first look for

Of course, a therapist might think to first explain why they are qualified on their website and list their expertise and skill sets.

Even though this information should be available on your website, it shouldn’t be on the first page. The first page of your website has to be about your client; what their needs are, what they are experiencing, and how you can help them.

How to write effective copy

The absolute first step in your marketing efforts is to know who your ideal client is.

Know who you want to serve. It doesn’t matter if you are more generalist or if you have a more narrowed niche, you need to know who you serve [and] the reason why is because knowing who you serve is going to be the direction for your copy.

Camille McDaniel

You cannot write effective and impactful copy, or create successful marketing materials on your website if you do not know who you are writing to, and who this work is for.

So, get clear on your focal client before doing anything else.

Then you can dive into writing strong copy that sticks, and draws this ideal client to you because it shows them that you really understand them.

The things that you know [your clients] are saying, incorporate that into your copy so that people almost [feel] … “Oh my goodness, get out of my head! … You know what I’m talking about, so, therefore, I feel like you can really help me.”

The important pages for your website

Now that your client knows that you understand them, and they get the sense that you can truly help them, you need to create these two pages on your website through these two call-to-actions:

  • A “learn more” page: this is where the client can learn more about you if you are the solo practitioner, or about the different providers within your group practice.

Have a page with your team on it, and a short bio and picture for each person so that the client can see which practitioner they may feel the most drawn to working with.

People are very visual, by and large; “We want to know who [I’m] going to be seeing, [and] do I feel like I can kind of vibe with the person that I’m seeing?”

Camille McDaniel
  • a clearly marked “get in contact page”: make it easy for the clients to now get into contact with you. Make it clear where they can book an appointment, send an email, or make a phone call.

Use yourself as a template. When you are looking for a service, what do you look for on that person’s website? What turns you away, and what impresses you? Keep note of those data points and incorporate them into your design.
